why would a doc prescribe provigil? would it had an effect if you don t need it?

Alert and focused: Not sure why your doc prescribes Provigil for you, but the drug was originally prescribed for narcolepsy. Many other uses have been found including improving alertness, focusing, motivation, helping with jet lag, some weight loss, and more.  It would seem it can  also be used for some depression symptoms, such as hypersomnia, loss of interest, concentration deficits, etc.

Maybe (not) . . .: Looks like you're in the UK while the docs on this forum are on the other side of the pond. While I can't speak for other docs, I'd ask you to review side effects of Provigil (modafinil) http://www.drugs.com/sfx/provigil-side-effects.html. I don't recommend medications &amp; treatments unless desired benefit exceeds potential risk. And unless you have a documented sleep disorder, it's not work risk.

Provigil use: A sleep medicine specialist can prescribe Provigil or similar stimulants.  They are indicated for narcolepsy or other disorders associated with excessive sleepiness, such as sleep apnea.  Fatigue can also be helped with Provigil or a similar drug nuvigil.

Depends: There are numerous studies showing some benefit from Provigil for treatment of adhd, but the fda raised concerns over possible side effects at doses necessary for adhd effectiveness, which is higher than for excessive sleepiness.  However, a number of psychiatrists have used it off-label in that way.

: All medications have approved uses as well as side effects. Health care is't pulling a bottle of pills off af a grocery store shelf. Your examining physician will asses your problem and guidenyou to the correct treatment.

i use nuvaring and was just prescribed provigil/modafinil. will i still be protected against pregnancy and will my periods still be regulated?

Nuvaring ?s: Unfortunately the safest answer is  possibly.    Modafinil may reduce the effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives.   Modafinil increases the body's metabolism of the hormones in the Nuvaring which could reduce the effectiveness.    It may also diminish the ability of the Nuvaring to regulate your menses.   Speak to the prescriber of both and see if there are alternatives for you .  Good luck.

when headache is a side effect of medicine, e.g., provigil, is it typically just a symptom to be treated, or a warning sign that the med is dangerous?

Symptom, if none bef: Mostlikely it is the side effect of the medication.  If you stop the medication, the headache is gone; then most likely it is the side effect.  However, if it persist after is stopped. Need to look for other causes.

does provigil have sulphur in it and would that be enough to cause a reaction? i am allergic to sulphur drugs. i was told it had a slight content as a binder.

Not to worry: People often confuse sulfa with sulfate and sulfite.  They sound similar but not really closely related in term of human biologic response.

No: It has to be a special test looking for it.

can i take provigil if i have parkinsons ?

Accepted Answer

It depends: Provigil has been used with daytime somnolence(sleepiness) in Parkinson's patients. But if someone has psychosis associated with their Parkinson's then Provigil may be best avoided as it can worsen these features.
