ive had three hsv igg clia blood tests done (4, 6, & 7 months post exposure). hsv 2 is negative but hsv 1 is inconclusive. what do three equivocal hsv 1 (.90) results mean? should i consider this negative or positive? two years ago, it was negative?

: Even if you have HSV 1, also called oral herpes, it is not a serious matter. Majority of the adult have had HSV 1. Other than cold sores, HSV 1 infection is inconsequential, except in rare instances of immune deficiency.

i have trouble interpreting hsv 1.2 combo test. super worried. negative for igm but super high positive 185.8 for igg?

Accepted Answer

Means past infection: A person whose lab test result says HSV IgG positive means the person had caught HSV sometime in the past, but there is no way to tell exactly how far back in the past. The positive result does not tell which part of the body is involved in the infection, because HSV affecting any part of the body will give a positive test result. The majority of adults have Herpes type 1 and are positive for HSV.

Lab Error: I would chalk this up to lab error, but in my patients we do not leave it there. There is a much better and more valid test to be done called a western blot test for herpes. This definitive test should have already been offered to you so that you can know for a fact whether you have herpes or not.

are my hsv 1/2 tests positive or negative. i took a hsv 1/2 igg type specific ab test.

my results :

hsv-1  >5.00
hsv-2    0.04?

HSV 1 is Positive: Your HSV 1 test is positive. Your HSV 2 test is Negative. However, it is good to apply them to the clinical scenario. Some people may have a positive HSV test but never have had any lesions. so, applying results to clinical picture is important. Good luck.

hsv 2 igg test came back less than 0.9 in july (neg). had minimal contact with new partner in aug. i waited 4 mos to test again and now i'm 0.91 (equivocal). what does that mean? the range for equivocal is 0.91 to 1.08. positive is more than 1.09?

: An exposure in August would cause a much greater increase by now and definitely into the fully positive range. Your baseline titers are simply a bit higher than usual. Exposure to many Herpes-like viruses that are not HSV can cause this.

i just got my hsv-1igg type spec ab, igg w/rfx test results and i'm having trouble understanding the results the index value was 1.06h does that mean positive or negative?

: A value of 1.06 for IgG for HSV means a recent or present infection with HSV, but does not equate to having a skin lesion.

i tested hsv-1 igg positive (22.5) but hsv -2 negative. last year i tested all came negative. i have been with few partners after that. no one had any visible symptoms too. i have no symptoms or outbreaks so far. so how i got or should repeat results?

: Probably you'll never know when and where you were infected. HSV1 is not often transmitted in absence of an obvious outbreak (unlike HSV2).

You have Herpes: There should be two results for the igg one for type one and one for type two. But having positive results for herpes for either or both viruses means you have been exposed sometime in the remote past and that the results do not represent a new infection.

: There are several different HSV IgG antibody tests, all with different ranges of positive and negative results. Different labs use different tests, but each test performs identically in all labs using that test. With all these tests, positive results often are false, especially if the numerical result is at the low end of the positive range (i.e. only slight above equivocal).

i just got my lab test results back and got a 1.08 on a hsv-2 igg test. does this mean im positive or negative or a false positive?

: This is a borderline positive result. Most such results are false; probably you do not have HSV2. If you have had symptoms of a new genital herpes infection, it could be a new infection. In that case, repeat test should be more strongly positive. Repeat the same test; if not clearly negative or more strongly positive, you likely will need a confirmatory test, ideally Western blot.
