i have a burning pain in the upper left abdomen. i was picking up heavy items during a move.  how do i know if it's a hernia? any home remedies?

Hard to say : Hernia can be hard to diagnosed at home. Burning usually goes w nerve type pain or ulcer. If it is a hernia, it tends to get bigger and needs to b fixed but u will have to c a physician to make the diagnosis.

i'm 4 months post mesh ventral hernia repair and now my abdomen gets hard  on my left side and causes pain in my left rib cage. is this normal?

Not clear : Where the hernia repair was on the abdomen vis a vis your pain.  I recommend calling your surgeon.  If you have severe pain, bowel obstruction, or fevers, you might want to go to the er.

See the surgeon: When you have had recent surgery, a new pain in the same area has to be considered to be related to the surgery until shown not to be.  Sometimes, post-operative adhesions can do this; sometimes swelling or fluid in the area of the surgery.  In any case, you need to see the surgeon who did the procedure so that he/she can evaluate the problem and treat it properly.

will a hiatal hernia cause charlie horses in the upper left quadrant of the abdomen just under the rib cage? yes, i take medicine for heart burn which has gotten somewhat worse lately?

Left upper ABDOMINAL: ABDOMINAL pain left upper quadrant contains spleen, kidney, stomach.  Pain can be left lower chest wall or pleuritic

i get a strange clicking sensation in my upper left abdomen right under my rib cage... it doesn't hurt but it has been bothering me. any ideas?

Not sure but best: if you get it x-rayed or CT'd if you are still concerned after a healthcare provider has examined it.  Any kind of muscle or tendon strain can cause such sensation especially if you move in a certain manner or position. There is also potential hernias that can develop through the abdominal wall, or adhesions of the intestines to the abdominal wall as well.  Thanks for trusting in HealthTap.

Some thoughts...: Any new painful lump should be checked out by your doctor soon.  It's really hard to say without a thorough exam or more history.  Some thoughts include a sebaceous cyst, a lipoma, a blood collection from trauma, or the beginning of an abscess formation.  Good luck and be sure to get it checked out!

Possible lipoma : Possibly it is a fatty lump called lipoma 
It is benign
