the doctor said my ear wasn't clogged & started me on meds for inner ear infection. i have no pain but ear is muffled bad after 4 days of meds?

Expected: To develop a middle ear infection you retain mucous behind the ear drum which becomes food for the germs that cause the infection. The mucous muffles hearing in what should be an air filled space.The mucous/muffling may remain for days/weeks after the germs are killed by antibiotics. Normal hearing should return gradually but may take a while.

Otitis media?: Part 1: inflammation and fluid collecting behind the ear drum (this is actually  is the "middle ear" area) is "otitis media" . This usually happens when one has a cold or respiratory infection (many times caused by viruses) where the eustacian tube, the opening that allows for fluid to drain from the middle ear into the throat, is closed up  (or else an infection travel into the middle ear).

Several options: A middle ear infection  generally hurts because the mass of germs/pus/fluid in the tiny middle ear space pushes the drum out. When/if the germs die the mass begins to shrink &amp; should resolve with fluid draining into the throat through the Eustachian tube. That can suck the drum in, causing some transient pain. The infection could also return after meds stop.Seek a re-check.

i'm 36 y/o & have had 4 or 5 inner ear infections this year. my doc has suggested i get grommets. what are the pros & cons. also have nasal polyps with about 5 ops over a 15 year period?

Inner ear infection!: you probably meant 'middle ear infections' and Grommet tubes are meant to ventilate /drain the middle ears in case the Eustachian tubes are blocked. You also have nasal polyps that were surgically removed 5 x before, all this points towards chronic inflammation, ? allergic, in your upper airways, kindly see an allergist, if you have access to one, Grommets will just be temporizing, good luck

This fluid moves within those canals to give your brain signals that assess your position sense. An inflammatory condition in these sensitive structures can be triggered by several things, inflammation being common.The inflammation can make you dizzy/nauseous/need to hold on. Hope this will fix it.

No: Drs can look thru the ear drum into the middle ear & detect a pus level for a middle ear infection. However, the events involved in a inner ear infection are hidden behind bone. Microscopic exam of slides of the inner ear can show evidence  of past infection, but the label is used after symptoms arise that point to the process.

Yes: It may hurt a but with movement, but exercise is fine.  You may want to take something like Ibuprofen 1 hour prior to working out.

It involves the labyrinth/cochlea which is the sensory organ that transduces sound into electrical signals transmitted to your brain.  Otitis media will often resolve quickly with antibiotics.
