Yes: Viruses (for example, the flu) can cause diffuse bodily aches and pains, including back pain.  Recent studies have shown a potential link between bacterial infection and back pain - therefore, it is possible that viruses may eventually similarly be linked to back pain.

Yes: But i see that you already have a herniated disc so my guess would be that you're simply feeling the pain more with the virus in your system releasing inflammatory compounds and worsening pain throughout your body.

my son was fighting a virus last week. wbc was 15.4 but his hematology team said labs not consistent with leukemia. he c/o mild middle back pain and leg pain sometimes. hematology aware and still not concerned. what could cause mild pain occasionally?

: If this is a viral infection I would expect the lymphocyte count would be high(60%) with the neutrophils dropping(30%). If the neutrophils are high, a bacterial infection is suspected requiring antibiotics. Mild back&amp; leg pain is nonspecific but more marked pain could indicate spinal or leg muscle inflammation. A consultation with a specialist in infectious diseases would then be advised

for 2months my stubborn, anti-doctor husband has had severe back pain, following a 30 day g.i. "virus".  anything he can do at home to relieve pain?

Back Pain: he can use Antiinflammatories such as Motrin and aleve (naproxen).  He can also use ice alternating with heat.  Back exercises can be tried and he could see a Physical Therapist or Chiropractor instead of the "bad" doctors.

Pediatrician : Yes, it may be virus, but at 5years of age, child can deteriorate very quickly if dehydrated. Contact pediatrician for evaluation and treatment.

Back pain: While vomiting and having diahrea can cause abd pain and straining causing back spasms. This could also be kidney stones or appendicitis. Really can be alot of things. I would see your physician asap in the am or urgent care if possible to rule out anything serious.

i had a minor stomach virus for 3 days. began to get lower back pain.  the pain has escalated to a number10 in 3days later! can this be the virus?

Abdominal pain: There are other many reasons to have stomach pain that radiate to the back.  If you are pain has magnified to 10/10 you will need to have urgent formal evaluation to rule gallstone disease, ulcers, appendicitis, abscesses, pancreatitis, etc.  Please don't wait because some of these can be life threatening.

about 7 years ago i had a virus of some sort and i never knew what it was. can a dr here give me some possibilities, im curious. started with pain in eye when moved, then fever, nauseous, and bad neck and should/back pain. fever lasted a week?

: There are several viruses that can cause those symptoms . One is herpes zoster, also known as shingles, which is caused by reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus that causes chickenpox. Shingles typically begins with pain or tingling in one side of the body, followed by a rash and fever (CDC). Another is Epstein-Barr which causes infectious mononucleosis or "Mono". Get Checked!

Needs to be seen: Most likely not appendicitis, but cannot rule it out unless there is a current workup.  Enlarged ovary should not cause fever (normally).  Have this worked up, but please let the er doc know what previous workup has been done.  And go to the same hospital where the enlarged ovary was diagnosed so they can refer to any labs/studies done.

is it better to use hot or cold compresses for back pain caused by the sciatica nerve?

Accepted Answer

Sequence it : If acute, use cold to decrease inflammation and swelling.  If after 48 hrs, heat will relieve the problems and loosen the muscle tightness in response to the nerve inflammation.  However, this is merely transient symptom relief and does not last.  Many meds available to improve discomfort level.  Physical therapy, and/or exercise may help from the get-go.  Some articles praise osteopathic omt.
