A member asked:

My son was fighting a virus last week. wbc was 15.4 but his hematology team said labs not consistent with leukemia. he c/o mild middle back pain and leg pain sometimes. hematology aware and still not concerned. what could cause mild pain occasionally?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

If this is a viral infection I would expect the lymphocyte count would be high(60%) with the neutrophils dropping(30%). If the neutrophils are high, a bacterial infection is suspected requiring antibiotics. Mild back& leg pain is nonspecific but more marked pain could indicate spinal or leg muscle inflammation. A consultation with a specialist in infectious diseases would then be advised
