Is calf swollen: Information is insufficient. Deep vein thrombosis is possible if calf is swollen. Pinched nerve in lumbar spine to any where along the sciatic nerve is possible. See your gp.

had laminectomy surgery on l/4,l/5. now have foot and calf pain. what is causing this?

Nerve root: Selective irritation of the nerve root at L4/L5.  Google "dermatomes", and you can see the nerve distribution for the lumbar nerves.  There is probably some post-surgical swelling and inflammation at the site of the surgery which is causing this.  Hopefully, it will get better over time.  Try Boswella (a powerful anti-inflammatory herb) and topical DMSO ("horse liniment") available in a feed store

Sounds like nerve: Most likely condition would be a pinched nerve.  The nerves that supply the feet stem from nerve branches traveling from the leg.  The "pinch" could be from the back at its root, but it an also be locally due to musculature.  Another thing to be checked is circulation because if blood flow is hampered to a an area, it can cause pain and reduce function in the nerves.  Get checked properly.

This is the formation of a blood clot in the vein in your leg. This can be associated with birth control pills, prolonged inactivity, or just random. It is dangerous because a piece of clot can break off and float through the body to the brain or lungs causing a stroke.

i have been running a lot and recently started to have lower calf pain. when i walk around or ice, i can sometimes feel the pain shoot down into my heel/foot. i assume its a strain and rest is best, but wanted to make sure it might not be serious?

: Not sure what “running around a lot” actual means. You would b best to be evaluated by your family doctor. They can determine the type of Referal you might require. A podiatrist  the swelling from running could be placing pressure on your nerves. But.  I Am more concern about why are your calves are swelling. Bilateral calve swelling with running is not normal. Further evaluation is needed

Not typically: Without calf swelling DVT not likely although without more information hard to say. Calf pain may just be a cramp or musculoskeletal strain/injury etc. If it persists despite analgesics/anti-inflammatories see your primary care physician.

Not a clot: It sounds like a muscle spasm ("Charley-horse") but hard to say without examination. Blood clot is unlikely without swelling. Infection should be ruled out - do you have fever?
