how can i know that tooth filling needs to be replaced? i filled less than half of my broken tooth more than 4 years ago. it is still perfect.

Ask your dentist: Dental fillings may last many years; however, eventually all fillings need to be replaced. Ask your dentist for x-rays and clinical evaluation. If concerned, get a second opinion.

Abscess: If the tooth nerve is dying due to decay it will form an abscess. Best to get the tooth treated with a root canal and crown. Note that on an xray if the decay is 1.5mm or less from the nerve the tooth will abscess.

i just had a cavity filled that was really close to a nerve. i could feel my tooth hurting during the procedure and evenafter that. the filling is moving and is falling out. is itnormal?

Yes: It depends on the pain deep or any filling could have sensitivity to cold or hot but should go away within seconds after swallow if it lingers for a minute this is not a good sign.
The filling should not move or fall out that is not normal.

what happens if you don't get your cavities filled? how long will it take for the sensitivity to stop when biting after tooth filling?

: Without filling, besides a sensitive tooth, the cavity can go deep which affects the nerve with severe tooth pain and bacteria can invade the gum and the root which cause tooth abscess and that tooth can be broken when the cavity is too big. After a successful filling the tooth will no longer be sensitive almost immediately. Please have it done as soon as possible. Take care.

do i need a third opinion if one dentist tells me i have 2 tiny cavities that need to be filled and another dentist tells me that one of those 2 tiny cavities is just a stain on the tooth, while the other cavity might need work due to an old filling?

: You can get a third opinion but don't be surprised if you get a completely different opinion. Each practitioner may diagnose you differently. How about saving a lot of time and restore the one tooth that needs a restoration and watch the other one every six months?

It might be: If there is a sharp edge or the area is rough, you may be catching your cheek when you bite down. Have your dentist take a look and see if they are related.
