Several things: Pain in this area is common. It can come from neck problems, posture, work environment (often desk jobs), stress, deconditioning to name a few causes. It can be helped with genral exercise (aerobics) and excercises to strengthen the neck  upper back and shoulder area. Start with your primary provider or a sports specialist or rehabilitation doctor.

Yes: Anti-inflammatory medications are good to take for this.  Most likely this is pain referred from your neck.

Myofascial Pain: If you are having a lot of stress, bad posture, weak muscles (muscle imbalance) then this may be secondary to myofascial (muscle pain). If the pain down the arm is shooting-like and associated with numbness and weakness then it might be a herniated disc pinching a nerve in the spine. Visit your doctor for an evaluation, imaging and treatment as needed.

Several possibilitys: One is a myofascial (soft tissue problem) often due to overuse and/or stress. Another possibility is "notalgia paresthetica" in which a sensory branch of a thoracic nerve root is irritated causing the symptoms. Sounds like you've suffered in silence until now--so now do something about it and get your doc to examine you.

: You need to make an appointment for mom to be evaluated.  Chest pains which are worsening should be looked at immediately.  It may be nothing more than a pinched nerve or some chest wall inflammation, but other problems can cause these symptoms, and she should have it checked out by a doctor.

Scapula Pain: Inflammation can occur underneath the shoulder blade where there is a bursa. This is called scapulothoracic bursitis and can be treated with therapy, NSAIDS, pain medications, and possibly a steroid injection. Neck exercises: Most commonly pain between shoulder blades is as a result of cervical degeneration and loss of normal alignment. So exercise needs to include building up neck muscles and squeezing shoulder blades squeezing together and holding together for three seconds.

Too late: Since you have been waiting a while for this answer (sorry), I am sure it is too late to go to the er.  Back pain between the shoulder blades is one of the most common "pains" that i see in my practice and can be caused from many daily living activities from computer use to large breasts.  Have a chest x-ray to be safe especially if you are a smoker.

Get checked.: I don't want to be an alarmist, but you could be having symptoms related to your heart. Heart disease symptoms in women are especially difficult to sort out. Other possibilities, of course, include gastro-esophagel reflux and gallbladder stones. Accepted Answer

Start some pain meds: Lie aleve (naproxen) or Ibuprofen (if no allergies or side effects with their use). Using a heat pad would be helpful. Some like to use ice rather heat; even alternating ice with heat is helpful.
If no improvements then certainly see your pcp to be evaluated ; investigated.
