Bullous pemphigoid: This is an acute or chronic autoimmune skin disease, in which there is formation of blisters,  known as bullae, at the space between the skin layers epidermis and dermis. It is classified as a type ii hypersensitivity reaction. It is not caused by bacteria, but there is always the possibility of secondary bacterial infection.

Risky: The rash can be any number of things from infection of the original blistering rash to adverse effect of taking a new medication.  Some adverse drug reactions are life threatening if not identified early.  It is possible to review a photograph via virtual consult and to ask a few key questions to put you in the right direction, but ultimately, you need to be examined in the near future.

Low Plt: Your medication list doesn't have the common medications that cause low Plts. SLE is a common cause. Therapy for low plts is determining  cause and treating the same. Would talk to your Rheumatologist  and determine how low are the numbers and not all low numbers needs therapy. A blood specialist can look at your blood smear slide and offer a great input. But remember not all number need therapy.

my mom is 56, on a breo inhaler for asthma, takes an antidepressant & iron & is in remission (over 5 years now) of bullous pemphigoid.  is the covid vaccines safe for her even with her having had an auto immune disease?

Autoimmune: Although the trials of the prereleased Covid vaccine didn't especially include patients with autoimmune disorders or patients on chemotherapy, the vaccine is not only considered safe for these individuals but it's highly recommended that they receive it. If they are receiving immunoglobulin or antibody therapy, they are advised to ask their physicians about when to ideally take the vaccine.

can i spread cicatricial pemphigoid to my family? i was recently diasnosed with cicatricial pemphigoid in my mouth, and am worried about passing it on to my wife and children. is this possible?

Phemphigoid : Phemphigoid is a dermatologic condition that usually appears as large, fluid-filled blisters typically on the innerside of the cheeks. This condition occurs when the layers of the mucosa separate and fill with a fluid.  These blisters (bullae) then pop exposing the raw underlying tissue causing pain.  This condition occurs due to the immune system attacking the basalar layer of the mucosa.  It is not known why the immune system does this. Diagnosis requires taking a sample of the tissue for histological analysis.  Treatment usually involves drugs that  suppress the immune system.  This disease is rarely life threatening, except in individuals in poor health or in people with otherwise poor immune system function.

Becasue this is an immune system problem it cannot be transmitted to existing family members.  It may be passed to offspring thru a genetic defect (which cannot yet be identified).

Evaluation by a board certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon or oral medicine specialist is highly recommended.
