While the spots are benign, the dangerous association is with polyps in the gastrointestinal tract that can become cancerous. A family history may help sort out the diagnosis. Lip biting, chapped lips and licking will not cause these melanotic macules.See a dermatologist, and have a colonoscopy.

AGE SPOTS: These sound like "age spots" or "liver spots". They are usually benign lesions that appear to be "stuck on".  However, some can be pre-cancerous and deserve to be evaluated by a physician. See your primary care provider or a dermatologist.
