Varied: Bronze skin can be caused by a more rare disease affecting the liver  (hemochromatosis) and possibly also by disorders of the adrenal glands. Best to get checked by physician so that appropriate workup can be done to find cause.

Yes: Sunscreen is recommended for people of all skin types as skin cancer is seen in every group.  Melanin is the pigment which is responsible for the brown color.  In african american skin, melanin provides a sun protection factor (spf) approximately equivalent to 13.4, compared to 3.4 in white skin.  That said skin cancer still represents 1-2% of african americans and asians.

High ACTH: Increased skin pigmentation in individuals with ai is due to increased acth production which in turn activates the production of melanin by the pigment cells (called melanocytes) in the skin via melancyte stimulating hormone (msh). Keep in mind that hyperpigmentation is not noted in patients with secondary or central adrenal insufficiency due to lack of acth elevation.

Apperently, YES.: This disease manifests in the 3rd to 5th decade of life, but can also be in children.  This is from iron overload that is deposited in tissues like heart, liver, and under the skin causing hyperpigmentation or darkening of the skin.  It likely goes away during menses because blood is lost during that time and the disease is not yet very longstanding.  Treatment is by blood drawing.  See dr. Now.

Haven't heard of any: Haven't heard of anything that causes sudden skin bronzing except a tanning lotion, a spray-on tan, or overstaying the tanning booth. Otherwise, a doctor should evaluate to see if it's jaundice or another medical condition.

Yes: Patients with hemachromatosis do not always have elevated liver enzymes. It is possible to have bronzing of the skin without elevated liver enzymes. All of these manifestations would be uncommon at 19 years old as end organ damage generally  takes decades.
