i gave my 3 year old son about 3 ml of bromfed dm and his supposed to have 2.5ml will that hurt him?

Accepted Answer

Unlikely: There is little difference between the 2 doses listed and at that level it is unlikely to cause any problem. It is also not likely to do much good. Many studies in the US have found little if any benefit from using such products in kids under 6. It gives you something to do, bit beyond that, I don't consider it worth the time.

my 3 year old was prescribed bromfed (brompheniramine) dm. 5ml every 4 hours. i just looked it up online and that is twice a normal dose. she already had it before bed?

May make her sleepy: I find little benefit of these medications at any dose. That said, it is a bit high. I would just let her sleep tonight and only give the 2.5 ml for any other doses you use later on.It should not do any harm.

i gave my 6 yr old 10ml of dimatapp otc then 2-3 hours later gave her bromfed rx what should i do will she be okay ?

: A child receiving two doses of cold medicine might have side effects of jitteriness, palpitations, dry mouth and be quite uncomfortable, but symptoms should resolve shortly.   I do not recommend cold medicines for school aged children and younger, as the benefits are small and the potential for side effects is large.

24 hours: Cetrizine has a 24 hour half life.  You'll need to wait a full 24 hours before dosing any other antihistamines.  Best of luck!

Probably: After 4 hours the benadryl level in the body has declined. The bromfed has a similar sedating effect but if this is near bedtime I don't see a problem. Most of these products have little benefit to kids under 12 but are not worrisome if given in proper doses.

can i use dimetapp cold and cough and bromfed (brompheniramine) together? this would be for my 6 yr old/ 60lbs

Accepted Answer

No: 1st of all neither of these meds cure and both may have dangerous side effects, albeit rarely.But they are similar agents and would perhaps result in overdose.

No problem: He will be just fine. If he vomited so quickly with the first dose, no t much was absorbed.

No: Bromfed (brompheniramine) already contains an antihistamine.

if my 7 yr old is taking bromfed dm and got attacked by mosquitos is it safe to use benadryl (diphenhydramine) to help with itching while taking bromfed dm?

Accepted Answer

Probably not: Probably not a good idea.  Bromfed and Benadryl (diphenhydramine) both contain "antihistamine" medications which act via the same mechanism.  This combination may cause excess sleepiness or lethargy.  Bromfed should help with itching.
