A child receiving two doses of cold medicine might have side effects of jitteriness, palpitations, dry mouth and be quite uncomfortable, but symptoms should resolve shortly. I do not recommend cold medicines for school aged children and younger, as the benefits are small and the potential for side effects is large.

For common cold symptoms, nasal saline spray is often effective in reducing congestion and post nasal drip related cough. Avoid mixing over the counter cough preparations. A pediatric cough syrup with honey is sometimes effective. Watch for signs of shortness of breath and fever.
