a few of my toenails are quite thick and yellow/brittle. i thought it was fungal but apparently not from lab tests. podiatrist says its nail dystrophy and is having me use urea otc. is nail dystrophy serious? will urea help? thanks so much?

: Since onychomycosis( fungal infection) has been ruled out, I would suspect that chronic microtrauma to your toenails from foot wear or walking technique is responsible for your toenail thickening. Urea supposedly softens thickened toenails.

A few: To cure a nail fungus, see a podiatrist to discuss your medical and surgical options.  Home remedies include:

vick's vaporub
listerine mouthwash
tea tree oil

they might help the appearance a little, but usually does not cure the infection. On the plus side they are cheap, and will cause no harm. Prescribed medications have the best chance for cure. These can be stubborn infections to treat.

Tape: Tape may help.  Moisturize.  Trim, file, sand the nail to its neatest and smallest size.

sorry but there are no home remedies that have proven successful in curing toe nail fungus infections.  Rumors have circulated for years about vicks, tree tea oil, bleach and etc.

See a doctor: Or specifically a dermatologist.  This sounds as if  you may have onychomycosis (a fungus infection of the nail), but without the ability to see this it is impossible to diagnose long distance.  Good luck.

: Thick, yellow or green, smelly nails indicate that you have a fungal infection. You will need to get a prescription nail antifungal med which is painted on for 3-6 weeks in order to cure the infection. Avoid further episodes by wearing dry socks and changing them frequently, or wearing open shoes where the moisture can evaporate. Apply foot fungus spray daily.

Once the toenails are involved, one must see a primary care doctor, dermatologist, or podiatrist for treatment.
