: To balance your system. Your metabolism works best within a narrow range of pH (acid content). Your automated system will occasionally make a correction by taking in a deep breath and having you exhale more CO2 which is a acid factor. By slowing/speeding or changing the depth of your breathing your body adjusts your blood acid content. The kidneys help this too but you won't notice.

Premature infants: Unfortunately in premature infants the brain center which controls the delicate balance between oxygen and carbon dioxide is not fully developed.Also the lung surfactant has not developed so the lung collapses between breaths and babies become hypoxic! all efforts are being made today in the world to prevent prematurity especially due to the fact that lungs are not developed !
