Self Exam of Breast: Yes. Absolutely.  In fact a good medical provider will teach you how to do this necessary self care.  I often instruct my female patients how often they should do this.  It goes the same for men in their twenties, they need to self exam their testicles for testicular cancer and know when something changes.

Know your breast: If your menstral cycle is regular, best to exam 7-10 days after 1st day of cycle. Sit in front of a mirror. Look for skin color changes.  Look for retraction of skin and nipples by pressing hand together.
Exam both sitting and lying down, feel for any changes that may be different, especially a mass.  Exam from under arm toward the middle of the chest.  Exam both breasts.
Folow up with your doctor.

Self vs. Clinical: A clinical breast exam is performed by a health care provider.  A visual inspection and manual palpation are performed to look for abnormalities.
A breast self exam(bse) is when a woman checks her own breast tissue once a month.  This is done to get to know one's own unique lumpiness and be able to identify when something is abnormal or feels different.

There is some debate in the medical community about the best time to start if you are not symptomatic. The American Congress of Ob/Gyns recommends that clinical breast exams start at age 20.  The American Cancer Society recommends beginning clinical breast examination at age 40.   Best wishes!

: Normal breast tissue varies for each woman and during the month. Breast tissue is mostly fat, with milk glands that grow/recede based on hormones, angled from the outer breast in towards the nipple. If you feel anything hard, like a dried pea, or the skin feels rough like an orange, or you have a new dimple or new contour, these are things to have a Dr look at.
