Brain tumor v. cyst: It depends on the imaging test.  A technically adequate contrast enhanced MRI scan should be able to make this determination most of the time.  It may be more difficult without contrast, or if only a CT was performed.

Brain tumor : No, if something was a cyst , it is a cyst, . However  there are brain tumors that are cystic  to start with. It willdepend on how your diagnosis  was made and what were the follow-ups.

No: Cyst usually refers to a fluid filled space. It may be a residual affect of stroke or in rare cases due to parasite infestation. Tumors can have cystic spaces in them therefore presence of a cyst does not rule out tumor.

Hard to say: If the interpretation on the MRI by the radiologist is that it is a cyst, then it is likely benign. It also depends if there is any area of enhancement that would suggest a tumor. Also if you have serial MRI scans, you can tell if it is getting bigger or changing which is more likely a tumor. The location in the ventricle is important too. If it obstructs the foramen it could be a problem.

Cysts: Symptoms? An arachnoid cyst is not cancerous and would prefer to leave it alone if you are asymptomatic.

Sometimes: Mostly, if you are looking specifically for Arachnoid cyst, then diffusion weighted MRI is done. Otherwise CT with contrast can also be done.

Head/neck scans: a CT scan without contrast is used to identify nose/sinus anatomy and membrane swelling and infections.
an MRI of the head with and without contrast shows the brain and sinuses, and is useful for outlining growths/tumors.

is it possible for an arachnoid cyst to be misdiagnosed and it actually be a brain tumor? (i know theres always a possibility medicine is not definite but i mean how rare is this?

Accepted Answer

: An arachnoid cyst is not a tumor, but rather a congenital variation.  Typically, it is an incidental finding of no consequence.  Well trained and experienced radiologists using updated equipment could readily and accurately distinguish a tumor vrs a benign cyst.  If you have reason to doubt the accuracy of your films, contact the radiologist and express your concerns.

normal brain parenchyma apart from 1.1 x 0.9 cm hypodense area seen at the right high parietal region with no associated surrounding edema or mass effect might be related to old insults rather than neuroglial cysts. could this be tumor?

: No, a brain tumor is rarely reported as a hypodense lesion.
