Bone: A true bunion is an increase of bone at the inside of the foot.  Surgery is the only option to cure it.

am considering bunionectomy for moderate bunion.  dr wants to use a screw and i am opposed. is there any way to cut and realign bone without using scr?

No screw loose.: There certainly is. I have used K-wires as well as screws for fixation for years. Either one works just fine. The K-wire does not remain in the wound as it is removed after several weeks. The removal is performed in the office and is generally not painful at all. There are some surgeons that often use no fixation at all, relying on  bandaging for adequate immobilization. Not recommended by me.

Pain or cosmetic?: Bunions typically form because of long-term use of poorly fitted shoes, especially high-heels etc...If they are not causing pain, then no medical reason to operate--if you want that fixed for cosmetic reason is a different story. If you con't to use poorly fitted shoes, then surgery with not help beacuse they will be formed again, which maybe worse..Follow your doc advice..

i've had 2 surgeries within 3 days of eachother for bunion removal. my screws keep backing out and bone incongruent. do i need the joint fused?

Screw loose.: Something is not right. Either the fixation was questionable or there was too much activity post surgery. You had better get a second opinion before the situation gets out of hand. Properly done, it would take more than 2 days to fail unless there was aggravating circumstances. Clearly, you would know if your post operative activity was at play here and if not, you should take action accordingly.

It could be Bunionet: Is a condition caused as a result of inflammation of the fifth metatarsal bone at the base of the little toe.It is usually characterized by inflammation, pain and redness of the little toe. If this what you have and bother you go to an orthopedic surgeon and have it treated.

No: The foot may spread making the deformity more prominent. A bursar may form as well.

Ask your surgeon as: She/he would be the best one to answer you, after ensuring the bone has healed. Do not do anything till she/he advises, otherwise you'll have problems for a long time.

Sasamoid: Yes , as a bunion forms the lateral deviation of the big toe follows the lateral movement of the sesamoid complex.
