Hole: A larger hole could tasks longer to close.  Be sure to wash the area daily - warm bath or shower and let dry.  If not improving...closing more each day...check with your doctor

popped a boil on my 4 year old's butt. it had come to a head and was draining on its own a little. i followed with antibiotic ointment. was this bad?

Staph buttock boil: Most likely this was a Staph infection which likes to "attack" the buttock area. Drainage is a good treatment - which is what a doc might do if severe.. Getting to a "head" helps drainage. I agree that a little antibiotic ointment to clean things up is a good idea - bacitracin or bactroban (mupirocin).  Important to limit spread among family/your kid by washing clothes / towels in contact with infected area.

Yes: You need to be reevaluated, recultured and the antibiotic changed appropriately and perhaps undergo some surgical drainage.

: The most effective treatment for a draining boil involves opening it completely &amp; removing both the pus and the tissue capsule that surrounds it. Oral antibiotics and reduce the chance the germs will spread to other sites. Doing both is a common standard of care. Doing only oral meds without opening the boil will likely just lead to a recurrance.

BOIL: JUST KEEP UP THE ANTIBIOTICS FOR AS LONG AS YOUR DOCTOR TELLS YOU TO.
BE PATIENT.
I DO NOT KNOW WHERE YOUR BOIL IS LOCATED, BUT FAIRLY HOT COMPRESSES FOR TEN MINUTES TWO OR THREE TIMES DAILY OFTEN HELP THE HEALING PROCESS.

Get it to drain: Draining the infected fluid and material inside the boil will most likely be beneficial. Remove anything that is hindering the drainage and continue the antibiotics. If redness starts to spread then you may need reevaluation.

please disregard my other questions. i went to doc for swollen nipple & its a abscess. im on antibiotics. i have to follow up with my pcp. i assume itll need drained? is that painful? i had a boil on back once lanced and hurted quite a bit?

: Antibiotics can  reduce the size and pain of an abscess. The most definitive cure comes when it is drained surgically and the core outer lining completely removed. Failure to remove the lining can lead to recurrence. It is usually done under local anesthetic but will still hurt.
