To lose weight you need to burn more calories than you consume.  It is not likely that you can sustain a diet less than 1200 calories daily, so the better answer is to do more exercise and burn more calories.

: It's healthy to loose weight slowly and steadily by reducing your calorie intake to slightly below your calorie utilization. You can do this by reducing intake, increasing exercise, or both. Before going on a diet you should have a complete medical, including cardiac, physical including appropriate lab tests. your efforts should be supervised by your GP or by a Nutritionist.

You can improve your body composition (more muscle and less fat) by eating enough protein (60 grams a day), cutting out sugars and empty carbohydrates, and working out 20-60 minutes a day.  Exercise increases your metabolic rate and low-fat dieting or fasting decrease your metabolic rate.
