Yes, but rare.: Blood clots are a rare side effect of BCP"s.  The chance is increased if you smoke or have a clotting disorder.  Still, bcp's are safer than risks of pregnancy!  Discuss the risk in your case, with your doc.

See below please: Oral contraception with conventional oestrogen/progestogen preparations produces raised levels of clotting factors and increased platelet aggregation which could lead to increase  the chance of blood clots.

Oral contraception with progestogen alone does not appear to cause similar clotting and platelet changes.

No smoking: Oral contraceptives can be associated with blood clots in the lungs (dvts) or lungs (pulmonary embolisms) and one of the bigger risk factors is smoking, especially over the age of 35.  I am not aware of studies that show Aspirin (asa) decreases the risk of blood clots while on oral contraceptives.

Rock and hard place: I am afraid you are between a rock and a hard place. The birth control pills with a progestin in them that has antiandrogenic effects, e.g., drospirenone (Ocella) or cyproterone acetate (not available in the US) have been implicated in blood clot incidence. You may want to pick a different  birth control pill and have a dermatologist take care of the acne.

Blood clot: Symptoms depends on the location of the clot. If it is in the leg : leg swelling, with pain.  If it is in the lungs it can cause shortness of breath, and or chest pain. The risk depends on the dose of estrogen.

Yas/ yasmin (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol): On sep, 6, 2013: 7, 405 people reported to have side effects when taking adderall. Among them, 105 people (1.42%) have blood clot in the legs.
( remember, this is of the total reports, not 1.42% of the total people. On adderall. Of these, the largest number were on yas or yasmin, (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) but not on any other birth control pills.

I : I am not aware of the actual percentages of each side effect of this birth control pill (bcp). If you check the package insert, this information should be there. On the other hand, i can tell you about my personal experience. I have been in practice well over 5 years. I prescribe bcp's all the time. I have never had one patient develop a blood clot from bcp. I believe part of the reason is that i screen my patients very well. I do not give the pill to anyone who has had a history of blood clots or a family history. Also i will not give the pill to a smoker over 35, and strongly advise against it in my younger patients.
Bcp's are safe and very effective if given to the right patient. They protect against ovarian and uterine cancers. If your doctor felt you were a good candidate, then your odds are very low for developing any serious complications.

i have previously had a blood clot due to birth control pills. my dermatologist is aware of this but she still prescribed me a testosterone surpresent called spironolactone. can i take it? or is it putting me at a greater risk of another blood clot?

Indirectly: this can raise your relative estrogen level, but no direct effect on blood clotting.  It may be worth your time to discuss this with your dermatologist, and maybe see a hematologist to best understand  your risks.
