Varies: Some cause no symptoms. Others can be associated with right upper abdominal, flank, back or epigastric pain. Nausea and vomiting may occur especially if the stone blocks the bile duct and/or inflames the pancreas. You may notice yellowing of the eyes, darkened urine or light / clay colored stools.

Yes you are right: Bile duct block often causes pain and jaundice. A liver function test can help to check the function of the bile ducts. Sometimes we need to do a MRI (mrcp) to check the health of the bile ducts.

Jaundice: Bile duct cancer is uncommon but carries a poor prognosis.  It will typically impede the flow of bile from the liver to the small intestine thus causing obstructive jaundice (yellowish discoloration of eyes and skin).  Pain in the upper abdomen, weight loss and nausea may be noted.

High bilirubin..: ..in the blood causes jaundice..the yellowish discoloration of the skin, mucous membranes and whites of the eyes. The rise in bilirubin is not lethal; it can be very uncomfortable with severe itching. This can be treated. But you are correct; this is typically something that occurs late in the course of metastatic liver cancer. Death likely results through a combination of many factors. Take care.

: If there is significant obstruction, and intestinal bloating, diarrhea occur, especially with meals containing fat, a common bile duct obstruction should be investigated by your GI physician . If the obstruction visualized by a scan is diagnosed, but without symptoms, enough bile is probably present in your intestine  to justify delay of surgical correction.

YES...: In about 1% of gallbladder patients, common duct stones may be present but unknown, and some stones form secondarily, and can cause the typical biliary tract symptoms (ruq pain, food intolerance, nausea, etc.)  a simple blood test will let you know if the liver enzymes and bilirubin are abnormal, which would then indicate further workup is necessary. Both: Bilirubin backs up in the blood and the tissues. In the tissues we call icterus

had my gallbladder removed in 2008. had a bile duct stone removed 2009.still having the same symptoms of gallbladder/stone pain.tests so nothing.sos!?

You could: Still have common bile duct stones, or other obstructions of your biliary system.  You need blood tests and possible sonogram, ct scan with contrast, and possibly an ercp.

hi doctor i was wondering how long does it take for a person to become jaundice after the bile ducts are blocked?

Bile ducts: It depends on the reason for the blockage. If a bile duct becomes completely occluded abruptly, jaundice will occur within 1 to 2 days, but the length of time would vary greatly if the process slowly occludes the bile duct. Good luck.
