Multiple ways: During the fall, if the brain is thrust against the boney skull, it can be injured producing a small hemorrhage. A second mechanism, the bridging veins between the dura and the brain are torn producing a subdural hematoma. With lateral skull fracture, the middle meningeal artery can be torn producing an epidural hematoma. With violent falls, traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhages due to arterial tears.

It pushes on brain: A subdural hematoma, as a result of a head injury, is a collection of blood between the covering of the brain and the surface of the brain. The bleeding after an injury fills the brain area very rapidly, compressing the brain with the pressure from the enlarging glob of blood (the hematoma). Our brains do not tolerate compression, which stops some of the normal brain functions, and then we die.

Follow up: Babies have a lot of plasticity of brain. Usually if they seem normal after the treatment for the hemorrhage, the prognosis is better. 
But the baby needs follow up with a pediatric neurologist at some point of time in the next couple of months to review baby for any changes.

Yes: Sub-acute bleeding by definition is bleeding that occurs 3 -21 days after the injury or fall.  I do not know the frequency of these types of bleeds but they do occur.  Thus, after any head injury, even if rhe acute ct or MRI scan is negative, the patient needs to be watched for a few weeks afterward by family and friends and follow up with their primary doctor for rechecks.

Concussion.: It depends on the severity of the head injury. Most of the time, the risk is there within 1 week.

Do not worry: Most closed head injuries by far are very benign, and kids are very resilient.  Your description is typical of a fully resolved bruise over the scalp, and sounds only like he has upper respiratory tract infection now.  However, if he seems very sleepy, has repetitive nausea and vomiting, and seems to act in unusual way, contact pediatrician just to reassure.

Filter: It does appear that anticoagulant therapy would be risky in this situation. An alternative is to insert an IVC filter to prevent the blood clot from traveling from the leg to the lungs. Of course the attending physicians ,who know all the findings, are best qualified to give advice in this case.
