Get it looked at: A black discoloration of the skin around the nail could be due to a variety of reasons including infection, trauma, or in rare instances a skin cancer.  If you have not notice any significant improvement or if it has increased in size, you should having it looked at by your primary care physician who may want to refer you to a dermatologist or podiatrist for a biopsy.

Chemical reaction: Vertical lines in bot finger and toenails could be due to some chemical that was ingested.Horizontal lines are more common and again caused by a drug or something ingested.

both of my second toes always have thick hard skin on the sides and tip of my toenails. sometimes the skin is itchy or hurts. what could it be?

Play sport?: If you play sports or your second  toe is longer than your first that may be the reason.

If it is only a: Callous that is usually seen when the nails are growing into the skin. The question is callous the right diagnosis. Sometimes, one sees warts around a toenail.

black tiny spot on my small toenail. i cut the nail portion off and dark spot came off with the nail. but left a pinkish wound on the skin. wat is it?

Open vs closed sore: Somehow the skin was injured. It bled and that is why the nail had a dark spot. It was just blood. If the pink spot is still draining, you have a small ulcer that needs topical antibiotic and band aid. If there is no drainage, it is new skin and healing.

Podiatrist: I think the best course of action would be to see your primary care and/or a podiatrist. May need that nail removed, in whole or in part. Typically an office procedure with local anesthesia.

Ingrown nail: Possibly.  If there is tenderness on the side of the nail, and the skin on that side is thickening, the most likely cause is an ingrown toenail.  I would see your Dr or a podiatrist to be sure, because they can become very painful if infected!  Good luck!  (Sometimes soaking the foot in warm Epson saltwater helps!)

Ingrown Nails: See a podiatrist for proper care. Usually caused by cutting nail in corners instead of straight across but truma could cause it and improper fitting shoes as well.

my big toe has some puss coming out of the side buy the toenail. the skin there is puffy and red. it causes minor discomfort.  what should i do?

Ingrown toenail: You should see a podiatrist to have the ingrown nail removed. In the mean time you could soak the toe in epsom salts and water, and apply an antibacterial ointment to the area once or twice a day.

why won't my toenail stop being painful after a year post surgery removed dead skin but still painful it's the side where the nail was removed pain?

Perhaps: The nail is too wide and digs into the skin. There is a procedure to make the nail less wide.
