i recently had surgery after which i had chest pains.  a chest xray was done to look for an oedema. it was found that i had bilateral multiple linear areas of subsegmental atelectasis in the mid and lower zones - something to be worried about?

Atalectesis: ="collapse" of segments of the lobes of your lung PROBABLY due to restriction from the pain of abdominal surgery....Using the proper breathing (ie: deep breathes and blowing air out against resistance (special apparatus is available) will correct the sitiuation.

what is lingular subsegmental atelectasis?

Partial Collapse: The lingula is the lower anterior (front) portion of the left upper lobe of the lung that corresponds to the right middle lobe. Atelectasis is collapse of a portion of the lung. So, subsegmental atelectasis means that portions of lung segments of the lingula are incompletely aerated. May indicate bronchial blockage, poor breathing, or even early infection.

Chest xray: that is usually a pretty benign chest X-ray finding and shouldn't cause pain.

how is subsegmental atelectasis of the lingula treated?

Accepted Answer

Atelectasis is the : accumulation of mucus in a part of the lung, resulting in  a collapse of the lung segment.  May also be caused by a growth or infection .  Treating the underlying cause  and  breathing exercises  as well as  mucolytics,   oral hydration  and chest physiotherapy  can relieve this
condition.  In advanced cases, therapeutic bronchoscopy is helpful.

Poor inspiration: Probably related to a poor inspiratory effort when the radiograph was taken. Often times if people are in pain or are obese they cannot take a big breath (which would expand the lungs and give a better look to the radiologist) so what we see are low lung volumes and small areas of collapsed lung - all told it is usually not a sign of anything. Sometimes atelectasis can cause a fever.

what does "minimal basal subsegmental  atelectasis" mean and is it life threatening?

NO: Failure to breath deeply for various reasons such as pain in a post operative patient can cause collapse of small areas of the lungs.  This usually occurs at the bottom or bases of the lungs which is minimal basal subsegmental atelectasis.  Using an incentive spirometer will resolve this minor condition.  It is not life threatening in any way.

Poor Asthma Control: Sounds like you have a history of poorly controlled asthma. With 4 months of worsening cough and atelectasis on CXR I would recommend seeing a physician who specializes in managing asthma like an allergist or pulmonologist if not already done so in order to get better control of your symptoms.

i probably have linear subsegmental atelectasis in the inferior right middle lobe and nonspecific stable subpleural ground glass density in the right middle lobe. 
is this  something serious or reason to be alerted?

Cause?: These findings need to be put in perspective by your doctor. He/she can describe them with respect to you and recommend what, if anything, you should do.

Nodes: Possibly. You need a thorough check up and will probably need the nodes biopsied. There are many causes for those findings

i was diagnosed with "mild right basilar subsegmental atelectasis" from a ct scan. i also have pkd.  could this be caused by the pkd? does it need tx?

Accepted Answer

Benign: Atelectasis is just lung that it is not fully aerated. Most commonly this happens from not taking a deep breath for the x-ray.
