Early Gout: I don't know exactly what you mean when you say your toe spasms. The observation that the toe darkened prior to the spasm is interesting. Anytime a complaint is made regarding the big toe, especially by a male, gout is considered, at least by me. Typically in sub-clinical gout, mild to moderate spasms of pain can exist. The toe can also turn a darker color of red purple. Sex and age are right.

It depdends: There are many causes of toe spasms/cramps and it is important to identify the source.  Cramps and spasms can be due to dehydration and low potassium.  But they can also be due to a nerve conditions as well. I recommend you see a specialist for further evaluation.

Circulation: Without a prior history of trauma to case bruising, my first thought would be poor circulation. As tissues receive less oxygenated blood, they turn blue and dusky. This needs to be checked promptly. See a podiatrist for an examination. If findings warrant, they will order circulation testing and possibly even refer you to a vascular surgeon.
