Benign findings: Dependent atalectasis is just compression of the dependent lungs when lying down. A normal finding, mild bi-apical scarring is simply symmetric scar formation at the top of both lungs, usually associated with aging. Don't worry.

: You had inflammation in the top parts of both lungs that healed and left scars. There is no active disease.
Please note that apical scarring is suggestive of healed tuberculosis lesion. You should tell all your doctors about this finding, especially if they consider treatment with steroids or immunosuppressive drugs.

: I doubt those findings are due to covid-19 infection if there is no abnormal finding in the lower lung fields. Repeat CXR with PA and apical lordotic views may give more information. If you are at risk for tuberculosis exposure in the past, then a tuberculin test should be done. CT scan of the chest may be necessary. Good luck.

i just found out i have mild biapical pleural parenchymal scarring found from a chest xray. i am 32 years old and have worked in factories for over 8 years. should i make an appointment for a ct? my family is high lung cancer risk. which worries me?

: That pattern can be seen in old burnt out pulmonary tuberculosis with no active infection. If this applies to you, your TB skin test will be positive attesting to prior exposure to TB sometime.in the past. A pulmonologist can advise you best.

Most likely OK: Small pleural based nodule is most likely a granuloma (left over from prior infection) but could conceivably be a small cancer. You will most likely be followed with ct, especially if you are a smoker. If there is no growth it is probably just a small granuloma and no biopsy is necessary. Biapical pleural parenchymal scarring is very common, but may also be followed. Calcific densities r likely ok.

No.: The scar is what's left over after you have healed.  Scars can't heal any more.

Not worth the risk: The risk of surgery to remove scar tissue is not warranted unless you have severe symptoms. You should discuss it with your doctor.

Accepted Answer

Possibly: For those with severe COVID 19 disease there may be long-term or even permanent lung damage. Those who are most at risk for this are people with COVID 19 who develop Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).

It Depends..: It depends on what was the cause of these scars are in the first place.  Most "lung scars" are due to a condition that has resolved and therefore have little clinical significance.  Larger areas of scarring might cause breathing problems.  You should consult a physician as to the cause of the lung scars.
