Yes: Yes, it is routine to use betadine to prepare a site before surgery.  It has been approved by the fda.

betadine was spilled on my privates during pad surgery 3 months ago. i experience pain, intense itching and the skin appears burned. i've tried micanozole several times, vaseline and sitz baths. nothing helps. no odor/discharge. suggestions?

: Keep the area clean &amp; try a simple hydrocortisone cream in a thin layer. You likely developed a chemical burn or an individual allergic response to the iodine or other ingredient. Antifungals are unlikely to help. A cool compress can reduce the itching. The area should heal from the inside out in a week or so.

i had surgery on my left wrist on the 11th. the orange stuff they used caused a very itchy rash and i told them i was allergic to betadine. any ideas?

? iodide allergy: It sounds like a possible allergy to iodides (iodine-containing substances).  If there is a rash in areas which were coated by the "orange stuff", that represents a "contact dermatitis".  Contact the surgeon to confirm it was an iodinated substance, and note for the future your iodine allergy.

please help docs! is only using betadine to clean a surgical suture enough for the 1st weak without cleaning with water?

Ask your surgeon: Ask your surgeon as some surgeons do not want the wound dressings to be disturbed. If the surgeon allows you to wet the sutured incision line then cleaning with water/saline or betadine are all okay. I do not allow my patients to sit in a bath tub but they can shower once the drains have been removed.

my doctor has told me to use betadine douche before my hysterectomy.  do i use it the day before, or the morning of my surgery?

Better ask your: doctor: it could be either, and you won't want any surprises day of surgery. Hope all goes well!

i had plantar fasciitis surgery 3 weeks ago. the dr said to alternate betadine and neosporin.  would mupirocin ointment work?

Accepted Answer

Ointment: the mupirocin would be acceptable to replace neosporin.  However, I would still suggest betadine or a hard soap like cetaphil to keep the area clean.

if you have an allergy to chloroprep would you also be allergic to betadine? after every surgery i break out in poison ivy type rash around site.

Accepted Answer

Not the same: Betadine is based on Iodine and Chloroprep is Chlorhexidine, a different chemical.  It is also possible that you are allergic to tape or latex which is used in bandaging the surgical site.

i had perianal abscess surgery one month ago and my doctor said you don't have to take any medicine but my wound is not properly healed and suggested for sitz bath with betadine solution.

Use warm soaks: Superficial abscesses not involving intraperitoneal area but rather perianal, when drained, can be managed without medicationsl  .  Rather warm soaks to area allow inflow of blood supply to enhance healing.  Any source of warm soaks including baths will enhance healing of surgical site.

Yes: Yes you can but you should see your dermatologist for treatment and evaluation to get the correct diagnosis and treatment.
