If the head is held in a fixed position (turned and tilted to one side, right or left), check with your child's primary provider or a pediatric orthopedic specialist. Yes: Make sure your pillow/s are appropriate. Sometimes it may help not to use a pillow. If stiffness is rather uncomfortable, a short course of muscle relaxants may be helpful.

It is pesky: Often a stiff neck results from sleeping awkwardly, particularly in a cold or drafty room.  It is good news that the pain improved and not surprising that it returned.  Continue to sleep in comfortable position, use moist heat and then do gentle range of motion stretching 2-3 times daily. You can take ibuprofen. Avoid further injury.  It will be gone, I predict, in another week. Best wishes:)

Moist heat: Moist heat to affected area every 4 hrs and motrin or aleve (naproxen) for several days

Easy things first: Try over the counter anti-inflammatory meds like ibuprofen, heat pack, icy-hot or ben gay. If that doesnt work, try a massage. Finally if none of those work, you might want to see your primary md. A short course of muscle relaxant can help. Make sure you take steps to prevent a poor sleeping position in the future otherwise the symptoms will persist.
