what is the best way to keep my magnesium up? i cant keep it level and my drs dont help. im diabetic and have cancer

Sustained release Mg: Is most likely to be reflected accurately if you are having levels checked, the immediate release forms will of course go up and down in your system.  Not much evidence that serum levels are as important as RBC magnesium.  But why are you needing to keep it up? 
A naturopath might help you with this.

Nuts are good: Nuts are rich in magnesium. You can search the net for others. But, you will find some that may make you gain undesirable weight like rice. So, if you are low on magnesium (by a blood test) take a magnesium pill over the counter daily and make sure your doc will follow up on blood levels. Taking much magnesium without supervision may cause heart problem.If constipated milk of magnesia (magnesium hydroxide) can fix both.

Magnesium supplement: I prefer very absorbable magnesium e.g. Magnesium malate or magnesium citrate.  Do use magnesium oxide as it does not absorb very well into your system.  Foods with magnesium are magnesium is found in fish, artichokes, bananas, grains, yogurt, black beans, almonds, cashews and brazil nuts.

No: That ignores the fact that your body regulates your magnesium levels. We don't know exactly how, or how much it matters. You per out magnesium you do not need. I suggest a duet with green vegetables instead of pills.

Mag citrate &amp; food: Magnesium  salt which are absorbed maximum- citrate,glycinate,aspartate &amp; taurate

Magnesium oxide is poorly absorbed.

Take magnesium rich foods- avocado,banana,spinache,cashew,almonds,dark chocolate,tofu,pumpkin seeds,sunflower seeds,beans,brown rice &amp; molasses.
Magnesium is vital for body- responsible for 400 cellular reactions.

Electrolyte balance: If you are having difficulty maintaining electrolyte balance while taking chlorthalidone you should discuss possibly taking an alternative blood pressure medicine with you doctor.

Ssri's: Most of our modern antidepressants are in the SSRI category and increase the extracellular  level of the neurotransmitter,serotonin. Some also increase norepinephrine levels. I'm unaware of their effect on magnesium levels, but there is evidence that magnesium supplements have some antidepressant properties and allow lower doses of SSRI's to be given.

Review with your doc: Magnesium is one of those minerals that can cause a lot of problems if you take too much of it.  The recommended dietary allowance of magnesium is 320 mg; getting this from food sources is entirely safe. Taking more through supplements may cause diarrhea, nausea/vomiting.  I'm not sure why you think 250 mg is not enough, but taking up to 320-350 per day should be safe. But check with your doctor:)

Why need it?: If for supplementing a low mag level, use magoxide. If for treating constipation, mag citrate is best. Be cautious of self prescribed mag since it may be a problem for some people like those with weak kidneys or on meds that can retain magnesium like spironolactone.
