Ultrasound: Arterial plaque can be investigated with ultrasound of the carotid arteries, the abdominal aorta, or the leg arteries. Plaque in the coronary arteries can be inferred by presence of calcium seen on an ultrafast coronary artery ct scan. Those are all non-invasive.

Cardiac cath: The standard is still cardiac catheterization. Cardiac ct and cardiac mri/mra are less invasive but not as good as cardiac cath using real time fluoroscopy.  Cardiac cath uses a hollow, flexible, "wire" or catheter that is inserted into your groin and then menuvered up into the heart. The tip of the catheter releases a liquid that can be seen by x-ray. It is great at seeing/fixing narrowed artery.

Very good: so good that 90% of middle aged or older people will have something, but over 90% of them will NOT get a heart attack that year at least.

In the very very small number of people who were negative at middle age. ONE had some heart trouble in one year, if I remember the study. Making it not all that great a test.
BUT if negative age under 30, ekg normal, the odds of heart  are 1/million

Cholesterol tx: Arterial plaques are called atherosclerosis, a fancy term suggesting cholesterol build up on the arterial wall. Although, the damage done is irreversible, stabilization of the existing plaques and prevention of new ones is paramount. Cholesterol poor diet, cholesterol lowering meds and Aspirin should be strongly considered. Treatment of potential comorbidities such as diabetes and BP must be done.

CT angio in many cases will produce the best images of the arteries of the three, MRA has its specific indications and stress echo doesn't show the vessels but shows the effects of serious ischem

Nicotine cessation is very important.
