Well fit cushioned: Often caused by training errors: increasing mileage too fast, too often and too much. Running surgfaces can also increase the impact stress on the leg. Shoes are the interface between your body and the floor. Overpronators more prone to this, many running shoes are engineered to help this. Cushioning shoes in general are best, models change too frequent to reccomend specific model.

Possibly: Could be tightness in your achilles tendons or other sructural or biomechanical problems. More supportive shoes, orthotics and stretching exercises are helpful. Apply ice to area after activity.

Not really: If toning leg muscles could happen just from wearing shoes.... It is too good to be true.  Walking and exercise will serve you better.  Toning shoes have somewhat a rocker sole, making it wobbly under you and the theory is, that makes your muscles work harder in standing and walking.  For those with balance issues (as seen in the elderly) this increases your fall risk. Not recommended.

i walk at least 1-3 miles a day in heels just fine, but when i walk the same distance in athletic shoes i get severe shin splints. what can i do

Equinus: It sounds like you may have a tight achilles' tendon and low arched foot. Anterior shin splints can be directly related to both of these conditions. Your sneakers may be too 'flat' for your needs, try using sneakers w/ a bit of a  heel & avoid the 'barefoot running shoes' or get an over the counter heel lift/ arch support & place them into your current sneakers. Don't forget to stretch!

Not typically: The term shin splint usually denotes an injury to anterior tibialis muscle origin on the tibia.  That is the muscle that dorsiflexes the foot and simply "running through" it will likely result in a worsening of your condition (if it has been accurately diagnosed).

Shin : Shin splints happen with muscle overuse. The classic example is of someone who hasn't been physically active who is trying to get in shape. New army recruits who are sent out on long marches get them. It is what is referred toas a compartment syndrome. The muscle gets swollen from overuse and needs more space within its fascia (membrane around the muscle bundle. Because of the swelling, circulation and nerve supply are decreased. This would make the whole muscle from knee to ankle painful. What you are describing sounds like a primary knee problem. This has been going on for some time. Maybe it is time to see and orthopedic doctor.

Shin pain: The pain could be several things.  The most severe would be a stress fracture.  This is usually manifested by very localized tenderness, as opposed to other causes which would be more generalized pain.  "shin splints" and other inflammatory issues such as periostitis and medial distal tibial stress syndrome can be just as painful, but are less serious as they generally do not lead to more severe complications.  If left untreated, a stress fracture in the tibia can progress to a full blown fracture.  The best thing for you to do is have an xray and an evaluation from an orthopedic surgeon.  Not all stress fractures will show up on an initial xray, and sometimes bone scans or mris are needed if indicated.  Regardless of the diagnosis, cross training with lower impact exercise is suggested (swimming, aqua jogging, biking, elliptical, etc.).
