High fiber diet: Rather than medication consider a modification of your diet.Eat lots of fruits and vegetable , nuts, raisins, prunes and dates. Reduce milk and milk products.  Have high fibered foods such as beans and legumes as well as jigh fiber cereals.

Constipation treat: Fiber, water, and activity on a regular basis can help keep your GI tract regular. Colace or an over the counter stool softener can also be beneficial. Occasionally people will need a laxative, senna and milk of magnesia (magnesium hydroxide) are commonly used. A colonoscopy is also usually recommended for people over 50 yo to evaluate their colons.

Careful: With taking excess fiber, as too much fiber along with inadequate fluids can make the constipation worse. Milk of magnesia (magnesium hydroxide) and a liquid diet only until passing stool is best. Then avoiding recurrent constipation requires 80-100 oz of caffeine free, alcohol free fluid daily with no more than 25 grams of fiber daily. If keeps recurring, you may need a colonoscopy if you haven't had one recently.
