i'm a mucous factory with pain in the nose. sinus rinse doesn't do much. had elevated liver in the past so i try to avoid otc pills. what s my best option?

Options available: I would recommend a combination of a nasal steroid spray, like Flonase or nasonex, (mometasone) and an antihistamine like Claritin or zyrtec.  This combo should significantly reduce mucus production in nose and sinuses as well as sinus headaches. Nasal Mucous: Advil or other anti-inflammatories will most likely do nothing to decrease the nasal mucous you are producing when you are ill. The most common and effective approach is with the prescription steroid nasal sprays such as flonase.

See a doctor: Your symptoms are consistent with acute rhinosinusitis. You need to see a local physician to be evaluated and treated. A course of antibiotic would be needed if there are signs of bacterial infection or superinfection. Which antibiotics are best will be decided by your physician.

That depends:  That depends. If you use a nasal spray that decongests than it will just help from producing more of that mucus. If use nasal saline spray or warm shower -each of those will help the nasal mucus that is there to drain out.

Try this: Neti pots can reduce nasal congestion. Mix ¼ tsp salt w 1 cup lukewarm water. More salt can also be used. Place solution in neti pot.  Tilt head & pour solution into 1 nostril. Blow nose lightly & spit out any liquid that drains into throat. Repeat on other side. This can be done in the evening before you go to bed & again in the morning. You can watch a video online to get the finer details down.

is singulair safe to take long-term? can it cause churg-strauss syndrome? on and off it for 3 years, only drug that clears up mucus in nose and throat

Considered safe: All medications have potential side effects, some of them severe, and Singulair is no exception.  Churg-Strauss is among those possible effects.  However, Singulair is considered on the safer end of the spectrum.  Naturally, the longer you are on a medication, the more likely it is that a side effect would occur, but there are no specific recommendations against long-term use of Singulair.
