Anxiety is best: treated with cognitive behavior therapy, clinical hypnosis, practice of the Relaxation Response (see book of the same name by Benson).  Medication may play a role but don't rely on that alone.  Behavioral techniques taught by a clinical psychologist are long-lasting and will help in other areas beyond the present-day stressors. No one pick: There isn't the be all end all of psychiatric drugs out there. If there was, that would be the only one we'd use. Everyone is different and everyone responds differently to these drugs. Certain classes of medication are for certain diseases, but you'll need to keep trying different classes until you find the right one or the right dose or combination. A psychiatry referral may be in order.

Medications that: Raise serotonin in the brain can significantly decrease baseline anxiety, which can prevent panic from happening.  Sometimes adding a long acting benzodiazepine like Clonazepam can further decrease baseline anxiety.

Meds/therapy: There r lots of reasons for tension & anxiety & it's a good idea to try to arrive at a diagnosis with a psychiatrist before treating the symptom--ie acoas are frequently anxious because they had to walk on eggshells as kids but answer is therapy in many instances.

Useful combination: Ask your doctor if there is no medical or presence any other psychiatric disorder contraindicating starting a serotonergic medication (Sertraline, Fluoxetine, Citalopram or other) in combination with Mirtazepine and Prazosin.
Mirtazepine will help you with sleep and Prazosin works well for nightmares.
It is important to get an accurate diagnosis of your condition, though.

Ford v Chevy v Dodge: There is no single best medication for everyone although we try to find best one for you. Great idea to avoid benzodiazepines when possible. Celexa is part of ssri family, most of which are approved for use to treat anxiety, so if maximum dose of Celexa doesn't work, try its cousins, eg lexapro, paxil, (paroxetine) proza, zoloft, etc. Don't forget psychotherapy, too. Both together better than either alone.

Accepted Answer

Not yet: There are no easy tests that predict med responses but we are getting closer and there are several tests of genetics and imaging which may predict response. A very good evaluation may also yield predictive clues as well as clinical experience. This is being researched.
