Usually, a person sees the doctor if the sore throat is bothersome, recurrent, or doesn't go away quickly (mainly to check for strep throat). Throat lozenges and Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Motrin can help decrease throat pain.

Tips: Tips: sore throat – gargle with warm salt water (1/2 tsp salt in 8 oz of water). Get strep test/culture if very sore. Congestion – saline nose drops or netti pot. For anti-inflammatory effect & mobilizing mucus- homemade chicken noodle soup.  Hydrate- lots of water/clear broth/ add honey & asmall amt. Of lemon juice to chamomile tea..  Fever/ pain – acetaminophen/ nsaid’s  rest!

Lotsa Options: Yeah, chloroseptic is OK. Tastes kinds weird and doesn't last all that long. Also avoid potential irritants like salt, citrus, hot peppers, and the like. And try cold, like frozen yogurt or ice cream/ice milk/ice chips and soft foods, nothing with sharp edges (like Cap'n Crunch or sea urchins). If it starts feeling like you're swallowing razor blades, and you spike a fever go see a doctor

Ginger juice: Better of two choices, though honestly not familiar with is use for sore thoat but is safe, avoid alcohol for any medical problem, it is not a medication.
 Try honey, warm herbal tea, hot shower, cough drops,  salt water gargle, hot chicken soup, honestly home remedies, besides alcohol, are best choices.

Cold or flu: If less than 48 hours, and there truly is fever (temp &gt; 100.3) then get to a doctor to get tested/examined to determine whether or not flu is present.  If not, then you have a cold.  I'm a big fan of the dayquil(for daytime, duh)/nyquil (for nightime)combination.  Mucinex (guaifenesin) d can help with the mucous, plain Mucinex (guaifenesin) if ur hypertensive (high blood pressure) if worsening, you need to be seen.

Symptomatic Treatmen: From what you describe it may be viral upper respiratory infection. 
Symptomatic treatment with humidifier and steam inhalation. Over the counter medications for cold have medications that may not be safe for baby while breast feeding (too many varieties with many commercially available meds to specify which ones are not good).

SORE  throat suggest: Hydrate, lozenges especially cepacol which has mild anesthetic properties, tylenol, (acetaminophen) advil, throat coat tea are suggestions.  Gargle with an Aspirin dissolved in salt water.   If fever, large lymph glands, or infected looking tonsils then get culture for strep.

Sore throat: For significantly sore throat w swollen tonsils / lymph nodes – see physician &amp; get a strep throat test &amp; culture. Antibiotics are imperative for Strep Throat.  Try saltwater gargles. Mix tsp of salt in 8 oz of warm water – gargle w this several times/day. You can gargle w Aloe Vera juice a couple of times per day. A mix of chamomile tea w honey &amp; a small amt of lemon juice helps.
