Need an evaluation: You need an evaluation with x-rays and MRI to determine how damaged the ankle joint is and if it truly needs replacement.

Variable: There is some pain involved because of soft tissues and bone are cut and manipulated.  Hardware also has to be placed.  Many surgeons performing use regional nerve blocks which substantially decrease and sometimes even eliminate the pain for an extended time.  Everyone has a different pain tolerance and response to pain medications as well.  In short the pain levels vary with individual cases.

Depends: With the changes in technology ankle replacements are becoming more common rather than fusions.

Yes: Again this is one of last resort. Some patients can have this done if the rest of the bone stock is good, if not i would recommend fusion of the ankle.

Better: The motion is somewhere between where your bad ankle is and where your good ankle is.

Accepted Answer

Fusion: A fusion requires bone to heal to bone and be correctly aligned and stable. This wil take several months. An implant does not require bones to heal together as the joint is being artificially replaced. This does not require nearly as much time to heal.

Increase: Most times there is an increase in motion of the ankle joint as compared to prior to surgery.

how long is the recovery for an ankle replacement?

Accepted Answer

6 months: Full recovery can take up to six months.  Most surgeons will limit weight bearing for a period of time.  I start pt at 6 weeks post op.
