None: There is no safest benzodiazepine. All are dangerous to some extent or another. All are addictive & habit forming, can alter your thinking process, increase your risk for falling & breaking a bone, and increase your risk for dying. Yes, they can also relieve anxiety, induce sleep & relax muscles by making you not care about anything. But talk to your doc to be sure benefit outweighs risk.

There is no "best": Benzodiazepines all work on the same receptors, and pretty much do the same thing.  Some are short-acting, others intermediate, others long-acting. Some are rapidly absorbed, others slowly.  Some hit the brain very fast, others much more slowly.  If you want something for temporary anxiety, a rapidly-absorbed short acting drug (like xanax (alprazolam) or ativan) may be best, for gad, Clonazepam or librium.

Yes: and this is true, for the same reasons (the same receptor systems are involved) with alcohol.  It also occurs with opioids, which involve a different receptor system. The nervous system seems to retain a "memory" of prior use and tolerance, just as the immune system remembers exposures to allergens. The tolerance doesn't re-emerge with the first or second use, but within a few days, it does.

Anxiety, generally: Benzodiazepines are a class of medications known as anxiolytics meaning anti-anxiety.  Many who take benzos do so chronically for anxiety disorders that are long-standing.  Others take benzos as needed to sleep or when anxiety suddenly becomes overwhelming.  As for how to have this class of medication prescribed, I recommend an open conversation with your doctor.
