Thyroid follicles: Most likely, the ultrasound is picking up benign follicular cysts, or areas of "colloid" (where thyroid hormone is made) arranged in a circular pattern or nodule. From the description (&amp; the 2 FNA biopsies) it's unlikely to be cancer. left thyroid nodule (2.5). fna cytology shows  cellular follicular lesion suggestive of neoplasm, oncocytic type. then further afirma testing shows bethesda iv and benign. dr says not cancer. is the afirma accurate? should i be worried?

: Yes, your nodule is likely not cancerous, i.e. benign. Pathology is read as follicular neoplasm (Bethesda IV) which has the risk of malignancy of 25-40% so thyroidectomy is usually recommended in the past but this practice has changed with molecular testing (Afirma) which only miss 3% of malignant cases if test is (-). You will have a follow-up ultrasound in 1-2 years for making sure no change.

Stop Armour: There is no way to check your levels or keep your thyroid in control in your current regimen. Armour thyroid is ground up pigs. Switch to brand name T4 only and get it regulated. Also, have repeat thyroid biopsy with afirma test and consider surgery to remove nodule depending upon lab and ultrasound.

Thyroid tumors: In hyperthyroidism are rare.  If the index of suspicion is low, repeat sonogram in a few. Omths, ofherwise proceed with an open biopsy.   Make sure you are nit taking too much merhimazole.

Variable meaning: Follicular‐patterned lesions of the thyroid are common; these include hyperplastic/adenomatoid nodules, follicular adenoma, follicular carcinoma and follicular variants of papillary carcinoma. Repeat biopsy with a sample sent for a genetic afirma assay may give additional useful information. In addition, discuss with your endocrinologist.

Follow advice of end: Your Endocrinologist can guide you best. Your biopsy appears to be inadequate to make a definite diagnosis. Future follow up with an endocrinologist is advised so that your thyroid can be monitored for any further growth of this nodule which is easy to do with an ultrasound.

Adenoma = ok: Most thyroid adenomas are actually follicular in nature and adenomas are benign, but carcinoma is not. So the fna confirms that it is adenoma and not carcinoma!  most adenomas can be managed by watchful waiting (without surgical excision) with regular monitoring--periodic ultrasound and possible repeat of fna etc..Consult doc if u are still concerned. Good luck.

i have a 4cm benign (per fna) follicular thyroid nodule.  nodule is not easily palpated.  i have difficulty swallowing that is causing choking.  remove or wait 6 months?  is the chance of the fna missing follicular cancer high enough to influence?

Thyroid nodule/choke: Better see your PCP about this fast!  Your difficulty swallowing is VERY concerning!  DO NOT WAIT FOR 6 MONTHS!

Yes.: A follicular adenoma may be a wolf in sheep's clothing, because cells from follicular adenomas and follicular carcinomas can look the same.  Other follicular adenomas may have almost no chance of being cancers, but overproduce thyroid hormone, and need treatment to prevent harmful effects of hyperthyroidism on the bones, heart and other tissues.

Nothing: Reports states the nodule was benign which means not cancerous, hemorrhagic, there was some blood which was probably from the size of needle used so don't worry.
