Medications like antihistamines may help reduce itching, but if exposure to the trigger is ongoing, there will not be a permanent solution.  A dermatologist or allergist may be able to identify the trigger for you.

i seem to have developed an allergy to our new dogs.  tried several antihistamines but benadryl (diphenhydramine) works best. can i take on a regular basis?

Allergy: Remember the best treatment is avoidance and we have the same problem. I'd sacrifice to be with my dogs too, hehehe. If you can tolerate Benadryl (diphenhydramine) and it's the only thing that works, you can take it regularly, but remember, it can make you sleepy.  Have fun with the dogs, i hope you will develop tolerance.

my allergies are worse in the spring. benadryl (diphenhydramine) works better than rx but makes me sleepy. is there anything else that could help?

Allergies are worse: There are other options to treat your Allergic Rhinitis, and Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is more for allergic reactions to foods, bites, chemicals.
OTC antihistamines such as Zyrtec, Claritin do better for your allergies , and there are nasal sprays with steroids such as Flonase , Nasacort work well without sedative effects. 
Singular helps people  with asthma+ for many with seasonal allergic rhinitis also.

can allergies make you swell up and retain water? i notice when i take claritin it lasts longer than benadryl (diphenhydramine) and im not retaining fluids as much

Unexpected: If you mean swelling which lasts hours at a time, it is not from water retention and is called angioedema.   Water retention tends to be most noticeable at the legs and ankles and would dent if you press your finger against the area.   Claritin does not relieve water retention but may reduce angioedema and yes it has a longer duration of action than benadryl (diphenhydramine).

Sinus Infection: Hi, it could be a combination of allergies leading to sinus infection. You may need to do some nasal steroid sprays along with antihistamines. If you are having pain in the sinus area with yellowish, greenish discharge there may be some sinus infection and will need antibiotics.

have severe allergies but all antihistamines cause constipation and abdominal distress. what alternative treatment/medicine is available?

Certain nasal sprays: In the US, Nasacort (triamcinolone) just went over the counter-- works great for hay fever/resp  allergies, nasal congestion, post nasal drip.  For eye allergies, OTC drops like Opcon A are helpful.  If you have skin allergies, itching, hives, etc, the best option is to talk to your doc.  Sometimes a medication like singular can help, or certain topical medications.  Good luck!

Yes, it is: The trouble is that almost any drug has a variable effects from person to person.  Some people can get away with using it for their symptoms without becoming drowsy.  If you experience drowsiness from the use of this drug, it should not be taken in daytime

A long time: The half life is 8 hours.  Assuming that after 4 half lives it is eassentially gone it would take upwards of 32 hours to be eliminated.
