Different: Everyone is different.  It also depends upon why you are having difficulty with sleep.  If you suffer insomnia talk to your doctor about this.  There are many medications that can be used for  this disorder.

Benadryl (diphenhydramine) which is used for treatment of allergies causes sleep as a side effect by working on different than Ambien brain receptors called H1.   Consult with a physician if you need to take sleep aids on a regular basis.

Neither: The short term use of either is about equal.If insonia persists [longer than 2 weeks] then cause is critical. Mood disorder, pain, medication, anxiety, are some common causess and if not present a sleep study is helpful.

Benadryl (diphenhydramine) vs ambien: If you can do without neither, would be better, or use only short term. Both can cause tolerance (you need more to get the same effect), so better start with the lowest dose, but ambien has an abuse potential, it is a scheduled drug while benadryl (diphenhydramine) is OTC. Try sleep hygiene: go to bed early at a fixed time, avoid internet, tv, smart phones before bedtime, have a cool quiet bedroom, good luck

No don't mix drugs: Please don't mix ambien with benadryl (diphenhydramine).  I would first suggest you speak with your doctor who prescribed you ambien and him/her that you are still experiencing insomnia.  Mixing prescription medication with drugs like benadryl (diphenhydramine) can be dangerous.  Perhaps you should improve your sleep hygiene first.  Sleep same time every night, bed is used only for sleep, cool dark room, no distractions (TV) etc.

i took 5mg of ambien (zolpidem) more than 3 hours ago and i still cannot fall asleep, would it be alright if i took 25mg of benadryl (diphenhydramine)? (usually works)

Sure: Zolpidem ( Ambien) and diphenhydramine ( Benadryl) act on different receptors in the brain and it would not be to much medication if you took it  3 hours before. Please remember that you need to give yourself 8 hours  after these to sleep. otherwise you might be drowsy the next day
