i have basilar migraine, what is it?

Type of migraine: Considered a subtype of migraine with aura, this migraine starts in the basilar artery, which forms at the base of the skull. It occurs mainly in young people. Symptoms may include vertigo (the room spins), ringing in the ears, slurred speech, unsteadiness, possibly loss of consciousness, and severe headaches.

can migraine in children be cured or only treated?

Treated: Migraine is a disease of childhood. Most children are undiagnosed till their teens.  You have to work with your child neurologist &decrease all triggers of child's migraine, like stress, eating more often and less, never get hungry.  Taking a nap in the afternoon. Do not expect straight a's.  Migraine can  be self limited in children, but it may come back later.  Prevention is the key.

Possible: It is definitely possible. Ocular migraines have been reported in children as young as 2 years old. A thorough eye examination should be performed to exclude other possibilities.

what is the treatment for basilar migraine?

Accepted Answer

Multiple options: The best idea is to stop migraines from developing.  Preventive treatments include: medications, procedures-botox, nutritional supplements, increased exercise, and avoidance of migraine triggers.  Treatments once a migraine develops include nsaid's (motrin), triptans (sumatriptan) amount others.  There is not, to my knowledge, a specific treatment for basilar migraine.  Get help-neurologist.

is it normal for pulse oxygen level to gradually drop from 99% to 80% over several hours during a basilar migraine attack? or are there other reasons causing the drop? is o2 a better treatment than triptan in this case?

: I'm dubious of that very low Oxygen saturation. It's possibly falsely low because your peripheral circulation in your fingers was vasoconstricted.resulting in poor perfusion of blood to the fingers.  Triptans can cause vasoconstriction. I would expect you to have symptoms if O2 sat was truly 80%.

diagnosed with tia/basilar migraine last night. both cat scans normal. history of severe chiari malformation. further testing warranted?

Symptomatic Chiari: It would be worth having a neurosurgeon evaluate you &amp; review your current MRI. If you have no current MRI, the neurosurgeon will order one &amp; any other needed studies.

NO! There is no scientifically based medical evidence that Migraine of any type permanently damages brain tissue!

generally speaking, can you take transdermal hrt if you have migraine with aura? i have migraine with aura with basilar migraine features. i know i cannot take the combined pill but the information about transdermal oestrogen is less clear. thanks?

: The basic issue is stroke risk, and the combination of classical migraine, smoking, and female hormones raises the risks.  The delivery system makes no real difference.  Discuss this with your neurologist and gynecologist.

i'm just after an op for breast cancer grad3 and i have been told i have non hopkins lymphoma and  basilar migraine and letrozole ?

Very complicated!: It sounds like you have 2 different cancers: 1. Breast cancer, and 2. Non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Letrozole is a medication used to treat breast cancer when the tumor has the estrogen receptor.  It does not treat lymphoma. You can ask your doctor what treatment is planned for each cancer.
