I'd suggest taking your son to see your pediatrician or family physician to rule out potentially serious conditions such as pneumonia.

Cough: During time of COVID? Hydrate well. Consider using a warm air vaporizer. Mix several teaspoons of honey into herbal tea w a squeeze of lemon juice. Or make tea w 2 tsp of Marshmallow root bark per 1cup of hot water (steep in a covered pot for at least 5 mins). Drink several times a day or as needed to relieve coughing. See a physician if cough is not resolving, difficulty breathing or high  temp.

Sinusitis: Depending on when the cough starts at night it may be that you have a sinus infection.  When you lay down the sinuses begin to drain and will trigger a cough because of the post-nasal drip that occurs.  If the symptom has been going on for more that 7 to 10 days you should see you doctor.

Fluids, expectorants: Mucinex (guaifenesin) and fluids can help break up the secretions. Dm syrups can suppress. Avoid drying antihistamines! they make it worse. This could happen from a viral bronchitis type infection, probably the commonest cause, or, if you aren't sick and it happens frequently after certain exposures, you could have allergic asthma. Cough is very often the main symptom of asthma, not wheezing. Get checked soon.

Rest, fluids, suppor: Without knowing the cause of the cough, I'll assume it's viral (influenza epidemic in US). Most viral illnesses run their course in 10-14 days (but less than 5 days if you get flu vaccine). In the mean time, notify your doctor, rest, drink plenty of fluids (urine run clear), &amp; keep tissue handy. Cough syrups (with Guafenisin) can help thin mucus, as does chicken soup &amp; humidifier. TTYD. Good luck.

Various things...: When i see a bad cough in clinic, and there's no clear infectious source like bronchitis, pneumonia or other type of viral illness, i start to look for things like asthma, gastric reflux, post-nasal drip.  It usually takes a good history and exam to figure out the cause.  Sometimes people have coughs that get better on their own, and we never figure out why they had it in the first place!

Severe cough: There are many reasons for coughing and while a cough suppressant seems desirable, the real answer is to identify the "cause" of the cough.  By knowing the trigger, the right treatment can be given.  Most coughing is related to throat irritation from cold, sinus infection or allergies.  Chronic cough can be related to asthma or even acid reflux.  Dextromethorphan is a common cough suppressant (dm).
