Severe cough: There are many reasons for coughing and while a cough suppressant seems desirable, the real answer is to identify the "cause" of the cough. By knowing the trigger, the right treatment can be given. Most coughing is related to throat irritation from cold, sinus infection or allergies. Chronic cough can be related to asthma or even acid reflux. Dextromethorphan is a common cough suppressant (dm).
