It depends: If you are menopausal or not producing much estrogen because of being very thin or athletic, it might help to use a vaginal estrogen cream or tablet.  If you are a gay woman and have vaginal contact with your partner, sometimes treating your partner can help. Also, if one vaginal antibiotic (metrogel) was used, an alternalte type ( cleocin) might help.

Vaginal pH change: Intercourse is obviously providing a change in the vaginal bacterial content. Have your partner wash thoroughly his penis and scrotum prior to intercourse including the area under the foreskin It is where smega accumulates in uncircumsized men which contains bacteria. Make it a part of foreplay in the shower if needed to "elicit his cooperation".

Prescription: You would need a doctor's prescription for antibiotics to treat bv.    Typically, there is no typically preventive measure that you can do to stop a recurrence.

Cups are safest: Silicone does not harbor bacteria so they are not a likely cause of 1st or more infections. Do follow cleaning directions and also make sure your hands are clean. Discuss prevention w/ OBGYN and definitely follow Tx advice to get rid of it now. You may never face it again - don't worry.

Take mind off it.: Bacterial vaginosis is due to overgrowth of certain bacteria in the vagina. Recurring use of antibiotics is affecting your vaginal flora and you may want the normal flora to recover. You did not say what your symptoms are but take your mind off and let the body flora reconstitute.

Recurrent BV: Recurrent BV is a common problem, and unfortunately the most effective treatments (usually metronidazole by mouth) can trigger yeast infections. BV isn't usually an STD in the usual sex, except in lesbian partners. Still, even with male partners, it's a good idea to either avoid sex or use condoms consistently (even with regular partners) for several weeks. For expert advice see an NHS GUM clinic.

Bacterial balance: Bv is caused typically by a bacteria called gardnerella, which probaly is present in some quantity in most women. When one cleans too thoroughly or takes antibiotics the protective bacteria die and the gardnerella takes over.  It is likely impossible to kill every single gardnerella bug, so all it takes is a few bacteria and a cause for imbalance for it to return.

BV: Men are almost never symptomatically infected by the organisms usually responsible for BV, but the skin of the penis can become contaminated with these bacteria and then they can be transmitted back to their sexual partner after she has been treated.  It would help for the man to use a topical antibacterial substance while their female partner is being treated.
