The : The dark urine should not be related to the hiatal hernia or prescription drugs.  Dark urine for four months should be evaluated.  It could be related to a liver or a kidney issue, so seeing a physician would be a reasonable next step.

Accepted Answer

Unlikely: The nerves in the low back travel downwards, into the legs, not up towards the neck, so from a neurologic standpoint, back surgery would not affect the neck.  However, it would be possible for back surgery to alter your body mechanics and indirectly cause neck problems.

Accepted Answer

No: It is difficult to make someone shorter through knee or spine surgery.  Typically, corrections of the knee or spine (straighten) will functionally lengthen the limb or stature.  The changes though are usually not significant.

No: Knee surgery or back surgery per se do not result in loss of height . But with ageing the loss of the articulate cartilages in the knee and resulting narrowing of the joint may lead. To lessened height. The disc between our vertebra loses water content as we age, this leads to degenerative changes and if combined with vertebral collapse as in compression fractures will lead to loss of height.

Yes, need evaluation: A bad mattress, muscle spasm and adjacent level disease are just a few of the possibilities so you should be thoroughly evaluated. I recommend you see your spine surgeon again and updated imaging and more PT may be the next step. Keep us updated.

Accepted Answer

Varies: There are multiple potential causes of low blood pressure in a post surgical patient.  I would sure let your doctor know.  Potential causes could include a low blood count, a reaction to your medication, heart failure or even a heart attack.  Again, i would sure let your doctor know.

i had back surgery on 1/15/13 and left hospital feeling ok. now i have some level of numbness from my face to my toes. what could be the cause of this?

Paresthesias: Back surgery sequellae usually cause problems in the surgical site and distally. For problems running the entire body, i think it would be difficult to place the blame on the surgery. I would return to my surgeon and explain the situation. A visit to a neurologist may be in order, since various scenarios, not excluding guillian-barre syndrome, need to be considered.

is clumping of caudal nerve roots a common incidental finding on mri scans? have had lots of corresponding symptoms. no compression, no back surgery. but have the inflammation of the nerve roots. what can cause caudal inflammation? thanks?

: Do you have a history of spinal injury? You are too young for spinal stenosis. I would expect symptoms affecting your urinary bladder and legs with inflammation of the caudal nerve roots. In view of the MRI findings I recommend consulting a neurologist or a neurosurgeon for evaluation and advice. The specialist may review the MRI on his own or sit down with the radiologist to get more 
 input.

i had a back surgery  and was prescribed pain pills that have cause some constipation. what is a good and fast acting over-the-counter laxative ?

Constipation: There are several options.  I usually tell my pts to take a bottle of magnesium citrate to help initially. Then start a daily regimen of Miralax (polyethylene glycol).  Also increase your fluids and fiber in your diet. If you drink the magnesium citrate and don't have a bowel movement you need to follow up with your doctor.

i have back aches and numbness in the shin area. had back surgery 15 years ago in the lower back l5 s4. could the old surgery be the cause? thank you

Depends on location: Hi!
the real estate mantra "location, location, location" applies here.  Sensory nerves come off of the spinal cord at each level of the spine and give sensation of specific areas ("dermatomes").  By looking at which area is numb, we can determine what level of the spine the problem is occurring at, and whether this level is also the level that is achy.  Then CT or MRI of this part of the spine.
