Inflammation: Croup causes inflammation around the vocal cords, resulting in narrowing of the airway, a characteristic barking cough and respiratory distress. At night, your baby’s airway becomes even narrower, as the head scrunches down against the chest. Also, the baby is not actively clearing his secretions when sleeping, which can cause choking episodes. Dry air from a heater also worsens the cough.

He should be seen : Croup is a viral illness that causes swelling in the baby's upper airway- near your baby's larynx (voicebox). Your baby may be hoarse. When it is severe, the swelling may block off airflow into your baby's lungs and cause problems with getting oxygen into the body. This can become a life-threatening senario in the youngest infants. Best to call your doctor, or if breathing is severe, go to the er.

Comfort measures : Croup is caused by a virus, so like a cold. The best thing to do is keep your baby comfortable. Use pain relievers as needed. Make sure your baby drinks plenty of fluids. If your baby is having difficulty breathing, can't stop coughing or is not drinking or eating well, take him to the doctor.

Maybe/not: This should only be done in consultation with the babies doc. These oral steroids can mute the bodies natural immune response and interfere with the effectiveness of immunizations. Timing is important.There is a reason it is a prescription medication.Anything strong enough to do good is strong enough to create problems.

Yes: He/she needs to be seen, hope the baby is feeding and growing fine, and no other symptom, night time cough can be due to several causes, reflux, upper or lower airway irritation/congestion, etc.. so better be seen, good luck

Reactive airway disease may be due to allergies, chronic aspiration of acid from gerd, and other issues (foreign body, etc.).  Croup is diagnosed on clinically. Further investigations—such as blood tests, x-rays, and cultures—are usually not needed. It sounds like your baby needs to be seen by a pediatric pulmonary doc.

By age 8-9 the airways have firmed up and are no longer capable of the vibration /noise production. Adults can get the virus &amp; usually have a URI/laryngitis or other related symptoms.

Mgt: I would suggest a cool air humidifier and seeing your PCP right away. If he has signs of drooling, respiratory distress or appears ill, please go to the ED right away.
