i was diagnosed with arthritis in the neck and back at age 28 with no familial history of early onset arthritis. what are some causes of arthritis?

Depends on type: Arthritis can occur at any age.  My youngest patient has been 6 months and my oldest 103..  Arthritis can be inherited, caused by injury or overuse,  infection, or a change in the bodies immune system.  Arthritis if the spine can also occur in people with psoriasis or inflammatory vowel disease.  If you are concerned about the diagnosis see a rheumatologist.

Yes: There are many different types of "arthritis" and many effect younger people. It is the autoimmune/inflammatory arthritides that typically affect younger patients.

Many things!: Joints can be inflamed in an inflammatory arthritis. Prior injuries causing joint instability can do this. The more joints involved, the more likely is is a primary rheumatic problem. See a rheumatology practitioner!

Any age; Swelling: Infants can get arthritis--although this is not very common.  Juvenile idiopathic arthritis is not uncommon in kids as young as 2 years-old but can develop as a type of chronic inflammatory arthritis at any age. The major symptom of inflammatory arthritis is joint swelling but can also involve joint warmth (warmer than normal joints), morning stiffness in joints, and often (not always) joint pain.

Several types: Young people can be affected by several types of arthritis-Juvenile polyarthritis, Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile osteoarthritis, Stills disease, lupus, dermatopolymyositis,several genetic conditions, injuries to cartilage and growth plates. A Pediatric Rheumatologist is trained to diagnose and treat these,often with different regimens. The are all treatable.

Arthritis, young man: Hello: Many arthritides can be seen in young males. Immune diseases like Anklylosing Spondylitis (which comes under umbrella of Spondylo-arthritides and includes conditions like Reactive arthritis); arthritis from infections like streptococcal bacteria, or viruses (parvovirus, or hepatitis virus). Crystals i.e., Gout, can be seen too. The history, pattern of joint involvement can give clues.

It depends: It depends on the type of arthritis, the joints involved and the severity of the involvement. The vast majority can be effectively treated so the child can live a normal life.

No: It can occur at any age although in adults it most commonly occurs between ages 40 and 60.
