Possible: Atrovent (ipratropium) (ipratroprium) has been available for quite a long while.  It has a low side effect profile.   Although i can't say for sure it very unlikely that after 10 years you will begin to have any secondary effects. Like any anti-cholinergic medicine it can cause urinary retention. This is much more common in men, especially if they have protate hyper trophy.  There are other meds you can switch.

Allergies: These treatments only manage the symptoms, they don't cure allergies.  Even allergy shots only "immunomodulate" your immune system, helping you respond less brisky to the things you are allergic to.  Another couple of treatments you might consider is nasal saline irrigation and nasal steroids if you haven't been on them in the past.

Best for rhinitis : Atrovent nasal spray works best for a drippy nose. A nose which produces too much mucous from the front leading to the need for lots of tissues. Post nasal drip might be improved but atrovent is not nearly as successful for this symptom.

Nasal antihistamine: You probably need a nasal antihistamine, it will dry it up, if not, a combination nasal steroid and antihistamine should also help. Oral antihistamine will not do much for you, at 81 i suspect you have vasomotor rhinitis rather than allergic rhinitis. Best to see an allergist.

Asthma treatments..: Asthma medications including inhaled steroids, inhaled atrovent, (ipratropium) and albuterol are all prescribed to help protect the lungs, decreased inflammation, and improve your respiratory symptoms. Poorly controlled asthma that is untreated can put you at risk for severe exacerbations and/or permanent airway damage/remodeling. Talk to your provider about risks/benefits of daily asthma medication use.

Asthma: Your doc must have thought that there was an asthmatic component to your condition. But atrovent (ipratropium) won't help any other URI symptoms. Get re-evaluated if you're not making progress.

: For best care consult a specialist with a special interest in sialorrhea in the department of otolaryngology at a university hospital. Speaking from experience, your symptom is not an easy one to treat.

It depends: What are you treating? They each act in different ways, and sometimes both are used simultaneously. You may want to separate the usage of each one during the day, to ensure you don't end up with too much solution in your nose that simply drips away. Using them at separate times can ensure proper absorption into your nose.

No: Ipratropium does not cause hypertension although it may potentially increase your heart rate a little.
